About this tour
See the whole of Mumbai in one day, the way Mumbaikars do: on foot, by black-and-yellow taxi and on the local train that carries more than seven million people a day. Your guide is from the city and turns the famous sights into stories.
We start at the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, then walk the Victorian streets to Crawford Market and to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST), the UNESCO World Heritage railway station, with the Municipal Corporation Building opposite.
From Churchgate you ride the Western line local train to Mahalaxmi, with your guide showing you how to board and where to stand. From the bridge you look down on Dhobi Ghat, the open-air laundry where clothes have been washed by hand since 1890, then cross the sea causeway to Haji Ali Dargah, a 15th-century shrine standing in the Arabian Sea.
After lunch at a local restaurant we go up Malabar Hill to the quiet Banganga Tank and the view from the Hanging Gardens, and end on Marine Drive, the seafront called the Queen's Necklace, as the evening comes in.
A good first day in Mumbai, or a good last one. Musafire runs it in small groups or privately, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
