About this tour

Dharavi is often called Asia's largest slum, and it is far more than that word suggests: about two square kilometres where close to a million people live, and where thousands of small businesses make goods sold all over India and abroad.

From Mahim station you cross the footbridge into Dharavi with your guide. First the industrial area: recycling yards where plastic, metal and cardboard from the whole city are sorted, cleaned and given a second life, then the leather workshops that make bags, belts and jackets, and the potters of Kumbharwada.

Then the residential lanes, some barely a shoulder wide, with homes, schools, small shops and temples, mosques and churches side by side. You see how the neighbourhood works and how people here have built their lives, and you can ask anything.

This is a walking tour, not a show: we keep groups small, ask before every photo and support local families and workshops. Musafire (people also search for us as Musafir) runs it every day, in English and Hindi.

Questions about this tour

Is a Dharavi tour respectful?

We walk in small groups, ask before every photo and stay out of homes unless invited. Many residents are proud to show visitors how hard-working the neighbourhood is.

Can I take photos?

Only where your guide says it's fine, and always ask the person first.

Is it safe?

Yes. Dharavi is a busy working neighbourhood and your guide knows it well. Watch your step in the narrow lanes.

How do I get to Mahim station?

By taxi or Uber, or the Western line local train from Churchgate or Bandra.
