About this tour

An hour and a half north of the Gateway of India, inside a national park that borders the city, 109 caves are cut into a single basalt hillside. Buddhist monks began carving them in the 1st century BCE and kept going for a thousand years.

Kanheri was a monastery, a university and a stop on a trade route that reached Persia and Rome. Few visitors to Mumbai have heard of it, which is part of the magic: you drive through the forest, then explore prayer halls, stone beds and rainwater cisterns with your guide.
